Proclamation
of the City of San Francisco
Commending Ciudad Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador On Becoming An Ecological
City
The City and County of San Francisco, California, Board of Supervisors
adopted the following resolution on May 22, 2000. The Mayor of San
Francisco, Willie Brown, signed this Resolution on June 2, 2000.
WHEREAS, The Canton Council of Ciudad
Bahia de Caraquez of Ecuador has enacted a Bylaw, signed by the Mayor,
declaring the municipality of Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador an Eco-City, or
"Cuidad Ecologica", based on certain principles of environmental
sustainability; and,
WHEREAS, In this Bylaw, Ciudad Bahia de
Caraquez resolved among other things to create an Environmental Affairs
Municipal Department, to declare a dry tropical forest a reserve zone, and
to implement a new process for management of urban settlements; and,
WHEREAS, Ciudad Bahia de Caraquez has also
begun to enhance the environmental awareness of the city's inhabitants and
to increase the level of participation by the community in self-planning
for sustainable management; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors of
the City and County of San Francisco commends Ciudad Bahia de Caraquez,
Ecuador on becoming an ecological city; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of
Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco invites the Mayor of
Ciudad Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador to come to San Francisco to meet with
the San Francisco Commission on the Environment, the Board of Supervisors
and the Mayor to talk about the Eco-City and to discuss ways to make
cities in the Western Hemisphere more environmentally sustainable; and, be
it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of
Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco requests that a copy
of this resolution be forwarded to the Mayor of Ciudad Bahia de Caraquez,
Ecuador. |
